What You Will Study
Computer science is the study of the systematic and automated processing of information. It deals with the structures, properties, and formal descriptions of information and information processing, as well as the structure, operation, and design principles of computer systems. It also examines fundamental methods of information processing and their application in different fields. Another core part is the development of experimental and product-oriented information-processing systems based on modern concepts. Computer science can be divided into theoretical computer science, practical computer science, technical computer science, and applied computer science.
Students work with the structuring, formalisation, and mathematical modelling of application areas through specialised models and simulations. They acquire knowledge of the engineering-oriented development of software systems for different application domains, with particular attention to adaptability and human-computer interaction.
The aim of the programme is to provide advanced knowledge of computer science in theory and practice, including in relation to an application area. This includes methods for solving application-oriented problems and translating them into forms suitable for computation.
In Göttingen, special emphasis is placed on close integration with the application area. In addition, the practical orientation can be strengthened through project work in research groups.
Programme Structure
The Master's in Applied Computer Science (M.Sc.) is an advanced degree programme in which 120 ECTS (4 semesters) must be completed successfully. The programme consists of three study areas: core academic studies, the professionalisation area, and the master's thesis. The languages of instruction are German and English.
Core Academic Studies
In the core academic studies, students acquire in-depth knowledge of systems-oriented computer science as a scientific foundation, enabling them in the professionalisation area to apply and further develop the specialised methods of the discipline.
Professionalisation Area
In the professionalisation area, students can shape their profile according to individual and subject-specific interests and career goals, while also acquiring profession-specific and interdisciplinary key skills.
Master's Thesis
Students write their master's thesis within their chosen specialisation, allowing them to deepen their knowledge in an application area and contribute to current research topics in that field.
Specialisations
The Göttingen Applied Computer Science master's programme is particularly characterised by its interdisciplinary profile.
In cooperation with other faculties at the University of Göttingen, we offer a wide range of specialisations. By choosing one of these specialisations, you gain in-depth knowledge in an application area and can contribute to current research topics in that field.
Career Perspectives
A degree at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Göttingen opens the door to innovative professional fields.
With a solid education in applied computer science, you can contribute to the technologies of the future, whether in medicine and biotechnology, business, geosciences, environmental technology, or ecosystem research.
Computer scientists are needed in almost every discipline. They work in banks, industrial companies, and social institutions, at universities and in cancer research; they develop computer games and apps, robots, medical technology applications, and much more.
Typical areas of work include:
- Software and hardware development
- Further development and adaptation of application systems and networks
- Consulting and training
- Research and development
By choosing an application area within the Applied Computer Science degree programme, the possible professional fields become even more differentiated. Career prospects for graduates of Applied Computer Science are excellent because of the interdisciplinary nature of the programme.

Aptitude Test and Selection Interview
All international applicants from non-EU countries must complete an online aptitude test covering a broad range of topics in computer science. At the end of the application period, you will receive an email with a personal link to the aptitude test and the login details. The test takes about 60 minutes and must be completed within a few days. The result is part of the selection process.
In addition, you will be invited to a personal interview if you are shortlisted for the programme. The interviews are conducted by video conference. The interview is also part of the selection process.
Eligibility Check
We do not offer individual checks of your eligibility for admission. You can find all relevant information in the admission regulations.
