Details
Business administration (BWL) takes the perspective of individual companies. During your studies, you will learn about the sub-areas in companies such as controlling, marketing or production and logistics. The main aim is to understand and explain the individual decision-making processes.
In our bachelor's programme, you will learn to solve complex business problems using scientific methods. In doing so, you will draw on current scientific publications. Lectures with the participation of guests from the business world, practical lectures, excursions as well as seminar papers and theses with practical relevance will give you important contacts and prepare you for professional life. You can organise your studies individually: Choose whether you want to sharpen your foreign language skills in English-language courses or prefer to attend lectures in German. Decide whether you want to specialise in topics such as management or controlling or whether you want to get to know different subject areas to discover your own interests and talents.
The entire course is finished when a total of 180 credits have been earned.
At the start of your studies, you will be supervised by older students who are tutors in the WiWi-O phase. As well as attending your first lectures, you will learn about important learning management and examination administration systems, and receive information on timetable planning and the relevant examination and study regulations. Numerous joint activities, such as a city rally, a so-called “Bunter Abend” and pub nights, will help you familiarise yourself with the university, the city and your fellow students. Before the lectures begin, you can voluntarily take part in the preliminary mathematics course (Mathe-Vorkurs/MVK), which covers selected topics from school mathematics. The MVK will prepare you optimally for the quantitative modules in your degree programme, such as the mathematics module. The WiWi student council organises a 'support programme' comprising various social activities around the MVK. These include a pub evening, a games afternoon and campus and city tours.

Structure
The Bachelor's programme in Business Administration is divided into the introductory courses (1st and 2nd semesters) and the in-depth and specialization phase (3rd to 6th semester).
Introductory courses (1st and 2nd semesters): This phase will provide you with the essential foundational knowledge you need. You will become familiar with fundamental economic issues and problem-solving approaches. In the 'Introduction to Business Thinking and Practice' („Einführung in das betriebswirtschaftliche Denken und Handeln) module, which you will take in your first semester, you will gain an overview of basic economic concepts and methods. You will also be given a 'big picture' and a 'map' of the various areas of business administration. As part of the 'Business Administration in Action' course, you will apply the theoretical knowledge you have learnt directly in a business simulation.
During the first two semesters, you will also acquire fundamental knowledge in key areas of business administration, ranging from accounting and finance to value chain management and digitalisation. You will also develop methodological skills in mathematics, statistics and data science, as well as gaining interdisciplinary insights into related subjects such as law and economics.
From the third semester onwards, the introductory phase is followed by the in-depth and specialization phase. This builds on your knowledge of various aspects of business administration and gives you the opportunity to specialise in a particular field. You can create your own personalised study plan and prepare for a Master's programme after completing your Bachelor's degree. If you choose one of the specialisations within Business Administration, such as “Accounting, Controlling and Finance”, “Marketing and Digital Business”, or “Management”, this will be noted on your Bachelor's degree certificate.
In the modules within the 'Business Practice' section, you can apply your learning directly throughout the entire course of study. This begins in the first or second semester with the 'Business Administration in Action' module, in which you will manage a company as part of a business simulation over several weeks, working as a team to tackle issues and make decisions ranging from procurement to sales.
On the 'Sustainability in Practice' course, you will work in small teams to explore a 'Responsible Innovation' topic, conduct independent research, and present your findings in the form of an academic poster at the 'Responsible Innovation Summit'.
We recommend that our students undertake an external internship. Provided certain requirements are met, the internship can be credited towards your degree, earning you 6 credits.
